The 2025 Golden Globes nominations are here, and Netflix’s Emilia Pérez is waltzing its way to the top with 10 nominations, cementing its place as the year’s most celebrated film contender. Directed by Jacques Audiard, this quirky drug cartel musical, which wowed audiences at Cannes, earned nods for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director (Audiard), and acting recognition for Karla Sofia Gascón, Zoe Saldana, and Selena Gomez. Add in screenplay and score nominations, and it’s clear that Netflix has another awards darling.
Close on its heels is Brady Corbet’s A24 drama The Brutalist, a tale of artistic ambition and survival, with seven nominations, including acting nods for Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones. Meanwhile, Focus Features’ Conclave, starring Ralph Fiennes as a priest navigating Vatican intrigue, garnered six nods, including Best Actor in a Drama.
Film Contenders Shine Across Genres
Other notable nominees include:
- Anora, Challengers, and A Real Pain held their own with multiple nominations.
- Universal’s Wicked and Coralie Fargeat’s darkly comedic The Substance turned heads, with the latter earning Demi Moore a Best Actress nod and Margaret Qualley a Supporting Actress nomination.
Double and even triple nominees made a strong showing. Sebastian Stan was recognized in two acting categories for A Different Man and The Apprentice. Selena Gomez also scored dual nominations for her work in Emilia Pérez and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. Kate Winslet landed acting nods for both the biopic Lee and HBO’s The Regime.
TV Spotlight: The Bear Roars to the Top
On the television side, FX/Hulu’s The Bear led the pack with five nominations, including Best Series – Musical or Comedy, and acting nods for Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Cólon-Zayas. Other standouts include:
- Only Murders in the Building and Shogun with four nominations each.
- Netflix’s surprise hit Nobody Wants This, which snagged acting and series nods.
- Anticipated newcomers like Baby Reindeer and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, each securing three nominations.
New Golden Globes Categories
In its second year, the award for stand-up comedy specials highlighted talents like Jamie Foxx, Ali Wong, and Seth Meyers. Meanwhile, the Global Box Office Achievement category is heating up with contenders such as Wicked, Alien: Romulus, and Deadpool & Wolverine.
Notably, Squid Game’s second season earned a nomination for Best Series – Drama, despite its late December release, proving the series’ global resonance.
The Race to the Golden Globes
With Netflix, FX, and Hulu dominating the nomination count, this year’s Golden Globes promises to spotlight an eclectic mix of cinematic spectacle and television excellence. The ceremony is set to air on January 7, 2025, offering plenty of time for contenders to rally their campaigns and for fans to pick their favorites.
Stay tuned as the awards season drama unfolds!
