Silk: Amazon Cancels Production of Sony Spiderverse TV Show

In a surprising turn of events, the previously announced Amazon series, “Silk: Spider Society,” will not be making it to our screens. Intended to be part of a strategic collaboration between tech giant Amazon and entertainment conglomerate Sony, the television series was set to enrich Spider-Man’s expansive Marvel universe. “The Walking Dead”‘s Angela Kang was the initial producer attached to the project along with “Spider-Verse” producers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal. The series was to be broadcasted on MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video.

However, despite initial plans, the superhero series is no longer proceeding at Amazon, according to an exclusive report by Variety. Yet, hope for the series might not be entirely lost, as an informed associate of the situation suggests that Sony might negotiate the series with other prospective buyers.

The Shift in Amazon’s Focus

A prior report by The Ankler mentioned Amazon’s inclination to attune the show to a male-centric audience. This adjustment was largely prompted by their triumph with male-oriented action series like “The Boys,” “Reacher,” and “Jack Ryan.”

Background of the Character: Silk

In the Marvel Comics universe, Silk, also known as Cindy Moon, acquired her superpowers from the same radioactive spider that transformed Peter Parker. Having escaped many years of captivity, she emerges as the masked superheroine, Silk. Widely recognized in recent Spider-Man comics, Silk also played a crucial role in Marvel’s original Spider-Verse narratives that inspired the animated movies. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the character had brief appearances in “Spider-Man Homecoming” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” depicted by Tiffany Espensen.

Upcoming Spider-Man Spinoff Series at Amazon

Despite scrapping “Silk: Spider Society,” Amazon is welcoming another Spider-Man offshoot series. The recently declared live-action series features Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir and is in process to be officially broadcasted on Amazon’s streaming platform.

Wrapping Up

With the cancellation of “Silk: Spider Society,” fans will undoubtedly be disappointed. However, Sony’s potential to negotiate the series with other buyers might just keep a glimmer of hope alive. Meanwhile, Marvel enthusiasts can look forward to the upcoming Amazon series starring Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir.
