‘Past Lives’ Wins Gotham Award for Best Feature (Complete Winners List)

The Gotham Awards, a prestigious event marking the start of the Oscar season, underwent a significant change in 2023. Traditionally, this ceremony has been a platform for the independent film community in New York City to showcase their best works. However, this year, the Gotham Awards expanded their eligibility criteria by removing the $35 million budget cap. This change has opened doors for major studio films like “Barbie” to compete alongside the usual indie film contenders.

Gotham Awards: A Broader Competition

Historically, the Gotham Awards were exclusive to films with a budget of $35 million or less. This restriction was aimed at highlighting independent films and often excluded major Oscar contenders. The removal of this budget cap in 2023 represents a significant shift, allowing bigger productions such as “Barbie” and “Ferrari” to participate. This year’s nominations included 20 films, 11 series, and 30 performances.
