Collaborating once again, Westworld’s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy bring to life another troubling dystopia in Fallout. The eminent video game saga, initially formulated by Interplay Entertainment, and presently owned by Bethesda Softworks, has successfully transitioned into a Prime Video series. In 2020, Amazon MGM Studios acquired the story rights with a determined vision to manifest a series that could rival counterparts such as The Last of Us and Halo. Quick to get on board with this venture were Nolan and Joy as well as producer Todd Howard who directed several installments of the video game franchise.

Comic Con Experience (CCXP) in Brazil seems to be the ideal platform for the reveal of the first trailer of Fallout this weekend. Meanwhile, Vanity Fair has tantalized fans by giving them a sneak peek into the series which is set to release on the streaming platform on April 12, 2024.

The narrative of Fallout unfolds in the year 2077, a futuristic era heavily influenced by the aesthetics of the 1940s. The story transpires 219 years after a nuclear war has drastically altered life on Earth. The focus is on Lucy, portrayed by Yellowjacket’s Ella Purnell, who has been living in a shielded vault isolated from the outside world. But, a crisis forces her to step out into an anarchic world striving for survival. Hinting at the same, Nolan comments:

“The games are about the culture of division and haves and have-nots that, unfortunately, have only gotten more and more acute in this country and around the world over the last decades.”

Co-starring with Purnell are Walton Goggins, Kyle MacLachlan, Mike Doyle, Moisés Arias, Johnny Pemberton, Cherien Dabis, Dale Dickey, Matty Cardarople, Sarita Choudhury, Michael Emerson, and Leslie Uggams, among others.

Fallout Will Explore Human Nature as Westworld Did

Despite the dreary alternate realities both Westworld and Fallout are set in, they seek to address real-world conflicts that humanity has faced, is facing, and will face. Central to Nolan’s approach was the depiction of the subjective distinctions of good and evil that can vary from person to person, especially when set in the extremities of a post-apocalyptic milieu:

“So many of us have such naive ideas, even now, about everyone else’s experiences, and it’s one of the things I love about America. It’s this giant, manic collection of different experiences, different points of view. Lucy is charming and plucky and strong…and then you see she’s confronted with the reality of, hey, maybe the supposedly virtuous things you grew up with are not necessarily that virtuous. If they are virtuous, they’re couched in a circumstantial virtuousness. It’s a luxury virtue. You have your point of view because you never ran out of food, right? You guys were able to share everything—because you had enough to share.”

The much-awaited Fallout series is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 12, 2024. By the looks of it, it promises to be another thrilling journey from the genius minds behind Westworld, taking viewers on an unforgettable post-apocalyptic adventure.
