The action comedy “The Fall Guy” from Universal Studios markedly disappointed at the box office, collecting only $28.5 million during its opening weekend. Although it received high marks from CinemaScore and received positive reviews, these accolades did not translate into the $35 million return that was projected, according to Deadline. Both the budget and upcoming competition amplify the low earnings of the movie, featuring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt with production costs ranging from $130 million to $150 million.
CinemaScore and Reviews, but Low Revenue
Despite it’s underperformance at the box office, “The Fall Guy” secured high domestic ratings and, managed to earn $65.4 million worldwide. This is Gosling’s third-highest opening ever, notwithstanding the action comedy’s low turnout. It’s sandwiched between Gosling’s roles in the movies “Barbie,” yielding $162 million, and “Blade Runner 2049,” generating $32.7 million. Meanwhile, Emily Blunt has had this movie rank as her ninth-highest opening, just a tad behind “Edge of Tomorrow,” which totaled $28.7 million.
More Movie Releases and Returns
In other news, the 25th-anniversary edition of “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,” directed by George Lucas, added a considerable $8.1 million (domestic) and $14.5M (global) to its impressive gross. The horror flick “Tarot” debuted this week, however, it only managed to scrounge up a rather unimpressive $6.5 million from 3,104 theaters.
Last week’s top-grossing movie, “Challengers,” gathered up $7.6 million, seeing a decrease of 49% in its second week, brining its domestic total to $29.5 million. Looking ahead, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is slated to release this week.
