The making of Suits LA is a story of creative reinvention and capitalizing on a cultural phenomenon. Creator Aaron Korsh, alongside stars Stephen Amell, Josh McDermitt, Bryan Greenberg, and Lex Scott Davis, is bringing a fresh take to the Suits universe, embracing its legacy while adapting to a broadcast network.
From Streaming Hit to Spinoff
Suits became a streaming sensation in 2023, smashing records on Netflix with 57.7 billion minutes watched. This unexpected resurgence prompted NBC to greenlight Suits LA, based on a pandemic-era script Korsh had originally written about Hollywood agents. With tweaks to incorporate lawyers instead of agents, the show was born, according to Entertainment Weekly.
New Setting, New Faces
Set in Los Angeles, the series follows Ted Black (Stephen Amell), a former federal prosecutor turned entertainment lawyer, and his firm, Black Lane. Alongside his best friend Stuart Lane (Josh McDermitt), Ted mentors associates Rick Dodson (Bryan Greenberg) and Erica Rollins (Lex Scott Davis), who are vying for a prestigious promotion. The show’s focus shifts to a single lead with an ensemble cast, exploring fresh dynamics and rivalries.
Connections to the Original
Suits LA isn’t shying away from its roots. Gabriel Macht’s Harvey Specter will make a recurring appearance, with the premiere teasing his connection to Ted through a shared history. Flashbacks to Ted’s mysterious past in New York add intrigue and further connect the spinoff to its predecessor.
A Balanced Tone
Learning from the short-lived Pearson, Korsh aims to recapture the wit and charm that defined Suits. With a mix of legal drama, inter-office rivalry, and Hollywood glamour, Suits LA carves out its own identity while honoring the original’s legacy. The series premieres February 23 on NBC.
