From time to time, video games serve as emotional deep dives, intellectual challenges, philosophical battlegrounds, or, perhaps most importantly, a platform for pure, unadulterated fun. There are moments when we just want to embody a superhero, don a pair of cool sunglasses, flex some mighty muscle, and smash things to smithereens. Enter Undefeated, a free open-world game that pays homage to Superman and the superhero genre at large.
The Genesis of Undefeated
Crafted by three innovative students from the Vantan Game Academy in Osaka, Undefeated first captured the gaming community’s attention upon its 2019 release on Steam. The game has recently received a significant update, which coincided with a surprise launch on Sony’s PS5.
For those who’ve missed this game when it initially launched, this update brings a range of features that amplify the superhero experience. Players can now look forward to:
- Breaking the sound barrier while flying at supersonic speeds.
- Performing the iconic superhero one-knee landing that embodies power and presence.
- Battling colossal mechs with spectacular, bone-crunching punches.
- Displaying unbelievable strength by lifting mammoth rocks.
- Using wind-clap techniques to extinguish fires—sorry, Dr. Banner, you don’t have a monopoly on air manipulation.
- Engaging in quick-time event (QTE) counters with supervillains and chaining combos akin to Dragon Ball fights.
- Executing energy attacks using hand-chops while strafing.
- Striking majestic poses amidst a rain of bullets from hapless soldiers.
- Navigating a series of hoops, maybe an homage to Superman’s lesser-known adversary.
- Gradually acquiring new powers and ranking up.
With the latest update, players can also harness heat rays from their eyes, adding to the superhero arsenal. There’s a new map event likely associated with this fiery new power. Additionally, Undefeated has received technical enhancements to support 4K and WQHD resolutions, providing a sharper and more vibrant gaming experience.
A Short-Lived Adventure?
Despite its appeal, Undefeated isn’t likely to dominate your gaming schedule for long. In fact, it might not keep you engaged beyond ten minutes. However, this brief escapade doesn’t over-promise; it does what it sets out to do with commendable simplicity. If you harbor a fondness for the superpowered fantasies reminiscent of Prototype or yearn for a decent Superman game (which we might never see), Undefeated could be just the thing for you.
For those who crave a nostalgic yet exhilarating superhero experience, Undefeated offers a taste of those noughties dreams with finesse. Unfortunately, given the chronic misfortune that plagues Superman video games, this might be the closest we get to the real thing. Injustice might remain the best official Superman-related game we have.
Looking Ahead: Undefeated: Genesis
Excitingly, the developers are already working on a sequel titled Undefeated: Genesis. This continuation transplants the superhero action to a sprawling alien world teeming with mutants. The protagonist undergoes a bit of a facelift—losing the iconic sunglasses and sporting a spiky fringe. While early visuals give off an Anthem-esque prototype vibe, only time will tell how this follow-up will expand on the original’s formula.
Closing Credits
As far as low-commitment, high-reward games go, Undefeated stands out for its simplicity and charm. With updates enhancing its features and a promising sequel on the horizon, there’s a lot to look forward to. Whether it’s a quick jaunt through a superpowered fantasy or anticipation for the next big chapter, Undefeated offers a memorable, if brief, adventure. For those ready to step into the shoes of a hero, you know where to find your game.
