Dune 2 Director Responds to ‘Empire Strikes Back’ Comparison by Nolan, Critics

The anticipation surrounding the sequel to the Sci-Fi epic, ‘Dune,’ has exceeded expectations with the film receiving glowing reviews. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Dune 2 has been compared to venerable film sequels The Dark Knight and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. In fact, Christopher Nolan, the director behind The Dark Knight, was one of many to make such parallels. Nolan favorably likened Dune 2 to his favorite Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back, during the IMAX re-release of Tenet.

Villeneuve found Nolan’s comparison profoundly flattering, stating, “It’s a comparison that I would have never dared to do myself. I think it’s a beautiful compliment because Empire Strikes Back is by far my favorite Star Wars movie. So, it’s like, coming from Chris, an incredible compliment.”

The Upcoming Release of Dune 2

Dune 2 features an incredible ensemble cast including actors Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, among others. The film is slated to hit theaters on March 1. Dune 2 currently boasts a 97% rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Nolan hailed the movie as “an incredibly exciting expansion.”

Directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts, the film sees actors Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem return to their roles from the first installment. Additionally, the sequel introduces several big names to the cast, including Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Austin Butler, Souheila Yacoub, and Tim Blake Nelson.

Dune: Part Two delves into the journey of Paul Atreides as he bands together with Chani and the Fremen, seeking revenge against those who tore his family apart. Plagued by a terrible foreseen future that only he can prevent, Paul must choose between his romance and the destiny of the cosmos.

MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman lauded the perfect execution of Villeneuve and co-writer Jon Spaihts’s script in handling the extensive ensemble cast of characters, noting that “Villeneuve and co-writer Jon Spaihts’s script allows each actor to fully inhabit their roles, and this is the film’s greatest tenet. Each performance is just so good. You’re enthralled by winding journeys, it feels as though the characters are pieces on a chess board moving of their own volition.”
