Director Yorgos Lanthimos returns with “Kinds of Kindness,” just months after his critically acclaimed film “Poor Things” dominated the Oscars with four wins, including Best Actress for Emma Stone. Lanthimos reunites with Stone, alongside Margaret Qualley and Willem Dafoe, also from “Poor Things.” The impressive cast further includes Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, and Hunter Schafer.
In a bold move, Lanthimos has each actor playing three different roles in the film. “We had started out with one story, but as we were working on it, we thought that it might be interesting to make a film that has a different structure to what we had done before,” Lanthimos explains. He and co-writer Efthimis Filippou aimed to create a thematic thread that ties the stories together under a single narrative umbrella.
“Kinds of Kindness” is structured as a triptych, showcasing the evolving hairstyles and looks of the cast. Emma Stone describes the film as weaving its stories in a way that isn’t immediately clear but builds on what has preceded. Given Lanthimos’ signature style, the film is expected to explore erotic themes in unconventional and unsettling ways.
