Denis Villeneuve to Adapt ‘Nuclear War: A Scenario’

Legendary Entertainment prepares to collaborate with director Denis Villeneuve once more for a film based on Annie Jacobsen’s bestselling non-fiction book, “Nuclear War: A Scenario.” The upcoming cinematic project will examine the theoretical aftermath of nuclear conflict, incorporating insights from both military and civilian experts. The movie will deliver a stark warning about the repercussions of escalating global nuclear tensions and explore the ethical dilemmas and existential threats posed by nuclear armaments.

Denis Villeneuve is reteaming with Legendary Entertainment to bring the New York Times best-selling non-fiction book “Nuclear War: A Scenario” by Annie Jacobsen to the big screen. The non-fiction book delves into the plausible consequences of a nuclear conflict, gleaning perspectives from experts in the military and civilian sectors who have knowledge of weapon development and emergency response planning.

Following the acclaim surrounding “Oppenheimer” — a historical drama centered on the development of the atomic bomb during World War II — Villeneuve’s upcoming venture into “Nuclear War: A Scenario” is promising. The anticipated film aims to alert audiences to the severe ramifications that escalating nuclear tensions could have in a politically tumultuous world.

Villeneuve and his long-time collaborator, Tanya Lapointe, will spearhead the new project. They plan to revisit themes similar to those in “Oppenheimer,” particularly the moral conundrums and looming threats associated with nuclear weapons.

This connection builds upon the success of “Dune: Part Two“, which has raked in more than $637 million worldwide, marking it as the highest-grossing film of the year thus far. Headed by principals Josh Grode and Mary Parent, Legendary Entertainment continues to bankroll blockbuster films, such as the recently released “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire“. This segment of Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise grossed an impressive $251 million worldwide in its opening week.

It’s official: “Dune: Messiah” — commonly referred to as “Dune 3” — is getting the green light from Legendary Entertainment, which signifies the culmination of the celebrated Dune trilogy. While the specifics of Villeneuve’s cinematic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s third novel are currently cloaked, the film is set to continue the epic narrative of Paul Atreides.

Villeneuve may prefer to delay undertaking “Dune 3” considering the commercial success and critical praise “Dune: Part Two” has received. However, given the studio’s probable impatience for him to make a swift return to Arrakis, Villeneuve has expressed his need for a break. The director feels a hiatus would be beneficial following his six-year immersion in the (fictional) desolate desert planet.

He explains, “I did both movies back-to-back, which makes absolute sense for me. I felt that it was a good idea to move forward right after Part One. We were already designing, writing et cetera. But it also meant that for six years I was on Arrakis non-stop, and I think it will be healthy to step back a little bit. First, make sure that we have a strong screenplay. The thing I want to avoid is not having something ready. I never did it, and now I feel it could be dangerous because of the enthusiasm. We need to make sure all the ideas are on paper.”

In “Dune: Messiah“, Paul Atreides, who is now feared as Muad’Dib, assumes the position of Emperor of the Known Universe with unparalleled power. Revered by the zealously religious Fremen, Paul faces animosity from the political houses he displaced in his ascension to the throne. Amid the internal opposition and external conspiracy plots aimed at undermining his reign, the most significant threat to Paul’s rule emerges from within his own circle. His beloved Chani and their unborn child become potential targets in the ongoing power struggle.
