After presiding over the popular game show “Wheel of Fortune” for 40 years, Pat Sajak has announced his retirement, concluding his tenure after the 2023-24 season. “The time has come. Our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last,” Sajak shared, promising further comments in the months to come.
The 76-year-old Sajak’s departure marks the end of an era for the game show, which he has hosted since its syndicated version’s debut in 1983, following a daytime edition run on NBC from 1981-89. Along with co-host Vanna White, Sajak holds a place among the most enduring hosts in TV game show history.
Suzanne Prete, executive vice president of game shows at Sony Pictures Television, expressed her gratitude for Sajak’s significant contribution. “Pat has entertained millions of viewers across America for 40 amazing years. We are incredibly grateful and proud to have had him as our host,” she noted. While Sajak is stepping down from his on-camera role, he will continue as a consultant on the show for three years, ensuring his connection with the Wheel of Fortune family endures.
Sajak’s journey with “Wheel of Fortune” began when he was a weatherman at KNBC in Los Angeles. After being offered the hosting role in 1981, he quickly became a beloved figure, with the show drawing in over 9 million daily viewers most weeks. Throughout his career, Sajak has won three Daytime Emmy Awards and a lifetime achievement award.
Despite his retirement from the daily show, Sajak, along with White, will continue to host ABC’s primetime “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune”, which is scheduled to start its fourth season in the fall.
