The iconic western film A Fistful of Dollars, originally directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood, is set for a modern remake. This exciting project is being spearheaded by Euro Gang Entertainment, founded by Hollywood veterans Gianni Nunnari and Simon Horsman, along with Italian producer Enzo Sisti and Rome-based Jolly Film, the studio behind the original movie.
A Fistful of Dollars tells the story of a mysterious gunfighter, played by Eastwood, who manipulates two rival families in a small town plagued by greed, pride, and revenge. Released in the mid-’60s, the film popularized the “spaghetti western” genre and catapulted Eastwood to stardom. It also inspired a trilogy that includes For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The original movie was an unofficial adaptation of the Japanese classic Yojimbo, leading to a successful lawsuit by its producer, Toho.
The details of the new remake are still under wraps, including the language, writer, start date, and cast. However, it is expected to be in English. This will be the first significant remake of A Fistful of Dollars despite previous attempts, including a TV version reported four years ago that never materialized.
Gianni Nunnari, an Italian-born producer, has an impressive portfolio, having worked on films such as The Departed, Se7en, 300, Immortals, and From Dusk Til Dawn. Simon Horsman has produced Legacy: The True Story Of The LA Lakers for Hulu, as well as Magazine Dreams and Rob Peace, directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Enzo Sisti is a prolific executive and line producer from Italy, known for his work on The Talented Mr. Ripley, The English Patient, The Passion of the Christ, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. His recent projects include Netflix’s Ripley, starring Andrew Scott, and Equalizer III with Denzel Washington. Sisti and Euro Gang previously collaborated on Roland Emmerich’s upcoming gladiator TV series Those About To Die.
Guendalina Ponti of Rome-based Ponti, De Sanctis & Partners, advised both Euro Gang Entertainment and FPC on the deal for A Fistful of Dollars.
Sisti expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am delighted to partner with Gianni again, having just worked with him on Those About to Die, and with Simon on the remake of this classic film, which created a whole new sub-genre in film spawning over 500 European westerns.”
Nunnari and Horsman added, “Enzo is one of the most experienced producers in the film business, and we are fortunate to call him our partner on this incredible project. We are determined to produce a remake that does justice to the great Sergio Leone’s classic.”
