Sony Pictures and Legendary have announced a release date for their live-action “Street Fighter” movie, set for March 20, 2026, despite the departure of directors Danny and Michael Philipou earlier this month.
Street Fighter Movie Release Date Competes with Project Hail Mary
The “Street Fighter” movie will go head-to-head with Ryan Gosling’s space film “Project Hail Mary,” both debuting on March 20, 2026.
Currently, details about the “Street Fighter” movie, which is based on the long-standing Capcom fighting game series, are limited. The film lacks a cast and director following the Philipou brothers’ exit due to scheduling conflicts with their A24 project “Bring Her Back.” Although production was expected to start soon, it will likely be delayed. Sony’s announcement of a release date suggests confidence in a backup plan.
The new adaptation aims to differentiate itself from the infamous 1994 live-action film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, and Ming-Na Wen, which received negative reviews upon release but has since developed a cult following.
Previous adaptations include animated shows and live-action spin-offs, such as the 2009 film “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” and the 2014 web series “Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist.”
