“Dune: Part Two” had a big weekend at the box office, taking the top spot and bringing in a domestic total of $81.5 million, making it the highest-grossing film of 2024 thus far. The success of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel has earned it a place in theaters among other highly anticipated releases such as “Kung Fu Panda 4”, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”, and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”, all set to hit the big screen in the coming weeks of March.
The sequel sailed through its opening weekend, garnering positive reviews, and easily knocking “Bob Marley: One Love” from its number one spot. Additionally, “Dune: Part Two” now boasts the biggest opening weekend of 2024, confirming its dominance at the box office.
On the international front, “Dune: Part Two” saw even more success. The sci-fi epic brought in an additional $97 million, leading to a worldwide opening weekend total of $178.5 million. These numbers allowed the film to swiftly dethrone “The Beekeeper”, which since its January release, held the top spot with a global gross of $151.4 million.
Nevertheless, “Dune: Part Two” faced stiff competition from other films. The sci-fi giant raked in $74.1 million more than its closest competitor “Bob Marley: One Love”, which claimed second place with a $7.4 million weekend gross. Meanwhile, Alan Ritchson’s “Ordinary Angels” claimed third place, clearing a respectable $3.9 million.
However, “Dune: Part Two” did not have the highest per-theater average during its opening weekend. That honor went to the newcomer “Problemista”, which, despite opening in only five theaters, made an impressive $28,187 per theater. Comparatively, “Dune: Part Two” made just over $20,000 per theater, although it opened in a much larger number of theaters at 4,071.
In the weeks to come, “Dune: Part Two” will see increased competition as movies like “Kung Fu Panda 4”, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”, and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” are released. Still, as of now, the sci-fi epic reigns supreme in the global box office.
