James Gunn Debunks Superman: Legacy Public Domain Rumor

Anticipation continues to bubble for the upcoming DC Studios’ film, Superman: Legacy. The intriguing project is being helmed by the studios’ co-CEO, James Gunn, who recently squashed rumors regarding the film’s connection with concerns about Superman entering the public domain. Through a social media update, Gunn made it clear that the film’s narrative is, in no way, influenced by such matters.

James Gunn Clarifies Rumors About Superman: Legacy Story

Gunn took to Threads, a popular Instagram-based social platform, to put an end to speculations concerning the appearance of The Authority in Superman: Legacy due to concerns about the titular hero entering the public domain. The director outright denied these reports, emphasizing that the film’s plot decisions weren’t affected by characters transitioning to the public domain.

Superheroes and Public Domain

A shift is looming in the super-heroic landscape, as Batman and Superman are expected to publically owned in 2035 and 2034 respectively. These iconic DC heroes will soon be joined by other memorable characters – Joker, Wonder Woman. They will add to the growing list of popular characters which have recently joined the public domain, including an early design of Disney’s Mickey Mouse – the Steamboat Willie version.

Whom to Expect in Superman: Legacy?

Superman: Legacy will feature David Corenswet (known for Pearl, The Politician) in the titular role, supported by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The ensemble cast features notable actors like Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, María Gabriela De Faría, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan and many more. The film is scheduled for a premiere on July 11, 2025.

The first phase of the DC Universe, dubbed as “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” is set to include a medley of movies and TV shows.
