Scott Derrickson’s V/H/S/85 Segment Set in The Black Phone Universe
Director, Scott Derrickson, has affirmed that his segment in the forthcoming horror film, V/H/S/85, exists within the same universe as his success-hit horror film of 2021, The Black Phone. This notable mystery thriller by the well-known production house, Blumhouse, is adapted from a story by Joe Hill and boasts an all-star cast including Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, E. Roger Mitchell, Troy Rudeseal, James Ransone, and Miguel Mora.
The successful film, The Black Phone, portrays a chilling tale surrounding 13-year-old Finney Blake (Thames), who is kidnapped by a menacing child killer (Hawke) and imprisoned in a sound-proof basement. Over time, Finney begins receiving calls on a seemingly disconnected phone. He soon discovers that these voices belong to the serial killer’s past victims, who desperately strive to help him escape their tragic ending.
The Black Phone: A Box Office Triumph
The Black Phone not only thrilled audiences and critics but also raked in a whopping $160 million plus at the box office. Although no sequel to this film is currently underway, Derrickson has given fans a surprise with a linked narrative in his latest work, a segment within the upcoming horror anthology, V/H/S/85, set to be released by Shudder.

During an exclusive chat with ComicBook.com, Derrickson explained the intriguing link between his segment in V/H/S/85 and the 2021 horror flick. In startling connection, he mentioned that both movies share characters who have the same extraordinary gift of prophetic dreams. The character Gwen, who starred in The Black Phone, and her mother, both possess this ability to dream things before they happen, which is instrumental in rescuing her brother, Finney, from the menacing child killer.
Featuring a range of new faces including Freddy Rodríguez, James Ransone, Jordan Belfi, Dani Deetté, Chelsey Grant, Alex Galick, Justen Jones, Marcio Moreno, Anna Sunberg, Andrew Ghai, Tyler Noble, Ari Gallegos, and Felipe de Lara, V/H/S/85 stands as the sixth offering in the popular anthology horror series, beginning with V/H/S in 2012.
