Netflix is drifting into your dreams with a new collaboration: an audio kaleidoscope by pairing up with Calm. Together, they’ve crafted a “Sleep Story x Soundscape” inspired by the Oscar-hopeful film, “Train Dreams.”
What happened
Today marks Netflix’s debut on the Calm app, blending film artistry with relaxation. The charming narrative, voiced by Will Patton, transforms Clint Bentley’s railroad drama into a tranquil audio journey. Adapted from Denis Johnson’s novella, “Train Dreams” dives into themes of solitude and resilience—perfect for Calm’s reflective audience.
Patton, along with the film’s composer Bryce Dessner and sound designer Lee Salevan, brings authenticity to this dreamy concoction. According to Indiewire, even snippets of script dialogue weave through the soundscape for added depth.
A new kind of marketing
In an age where subtlety wins, this audio escapade could redefine how specialty films reach audiences. Rather than assert dominance with volume, Quiet Marketing™ does its wooing while you snooze.
Calm is no stranger to star-studded collaborations, having previously courted “Venom: The Last Dance” fans with Tom Hardy’s silky tones. They’ve also spun tales with classics like “Pride and Prejudice” and original narratives by Walton Goggins and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The film boasts a stellar cast, including Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, and William H. Macy. Netflix is taking the experience beyond Calm, spreading its dreamy wings on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and X.
Could audio-based counterprogramming be the indie film hero we didn’t know we needed?
