Acclaimed filmmaker Sofia Coppola, well-known for her evocative visual storytelling, is poised to share a new medium of artistic expression – the printed word. For the first time, Coppola will offer a deeply personal look into her life and career with the forthcoming book, Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999-2023. Set for a fall release, the book will provide readers with an unprecedented glimpse into Coppola’s creative process and development over two transformative decades.
Though many texts have been written about Coppola, this is the first opportunity to view the filmmaker’s journey through her own lens. The volume is curated from Coppola’s personal trove of photographs, annotated scripts, and never-before-seen behind-the-scenes documentation, promising to be as intimate and visually striking as the films she’s made over her distinguished career.
The book spans all eight of her films, starting from her breakout film ‘The Virgin Suicides’ in 1999 up to her upcoming film ‘Priscilla,’ starring rising talents Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi. Along with this encompassing trajectory, the book will also feature collages of influences that shaped Coppola’s aesthetic and storytelling style, offering a comprehensive view of the filmmaker’s cinematic evolution.
“When I was shooting Priscilla there were a lot of moments that reminded me of other movies I’d made. It sort of felt like a culmination of my other work and a real full-circle moment. There were a few moments where I thought, Oh God, am I just repeating myself? Is this too much like Marie Antoinette? But I’m self-aware enough to be okay with that now. Identity and the concept of a ‘trophy wife’ have always been interesting to me, and Priscilla let me explore those in a new setting. “
It’s very much a story about Priscilla becoming who she is and figuring out her own sense of womanhood. She easily could’ve stayed in the role of Mrs. Elvis Presley, but she chose to find her own way. She experienced so many of the same things every young woman does but in such a grand environment––similar to Marie.”
