Robert Downey Jr. Reveals Story Behind Return as Doctor Doom

Robert Downey Jr. is officially back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time, he’s trading Iron Man’s armor for Doctor Doom’s iconic mask. At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Downey Jr. shocked fans by revealing his new role in Avengers: Doomsday, slated for release in 2026. His return, after a four-year hiatus from the MCU, marks a significant pivot for Marvel Studios as they gear up for a new phase that moves away from the underwhelming Kang storyline.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Return and the Casting Process

In a candid discussion on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Downey Jr. opened up about how his casting as Doctor Doom came to be. Contrary to fan speculation, the idea of him reprising his role as Tony Stark was never on the table. Instead, Marvel Studios was keen on making his return special, leading to discussions about Doctor Doom. Downey Jr. shared:

“So, probably a year ago…cause, you know, [Kevin] Feige and I have kept in touch. We’re pals. Favreau, Feige, and I have kept in touch. I’m close with the Russo Brothers; we have other business we’re doing. So, there’s this little group of fellow travelers, and I had this instinct that I wanted to go to Bob Iger, and I had an idea outside of the Cinematic Universe for how I could be of service to what’s going on in the Parks and all their location-based entertainment.”

He further elaborated on how the conversation evolved:

“Susan and I were sitting down with Feige at one point, and he said, ‘It just keeps occurring to me that if you were to come back…’ and Susan was like, ‘Wait, wait, come back as what?’ Then we both realized over time that it was another thing that just disproves any doubt anyone could ever have about that guy, a very sophisticated creative thinker, about how can we not go backward, how can we not disappoint expectations, how we can continue to beat expectations? And he brought up Victor Von Doom. I looked up this character and I was like, ‘Wow.’ Later, Kevin goes, ‘Let’s get Victor Von Doom right. Let’s get that right.'”

Marvel’s Strategic Pivot After Kang’s Reception

Downey Jr.’s casting as Doctor Doom comes at a time when Marvel Studios is rethinking its strategy. The lukewarm response to Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror, coupled with the actor’s legal troubles, has pushed Marvel to shift gears. Downey Jr.’s return as Doom represents a significant change in direction, aiming to reinvigorate the franchise with a beloved actor in a complex new role.

The Russo brothers, who directed some of the MCU’s biggest hits, are returning to helm both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). They emphasized the importance of getting Doctor Doom right, given the character’s previous underwhelming portrayals in other films.

Disney’s Box Office Resurgence

Disney, the parent company of Marvel Studios, is also experiencing a box office resurgence. Recent hits like Deadpool & Wolverine have contributed to Disney’s bounce back, pushing the MCU past the $30 billion mark in global box office earnings【22†source】. This renewed success comes at a crucial time as Marvel Studios looks to maintain its dominance in the entertainment industry.

Fan Reactions and Expectations

Fan reactions to Downey Jr.’s new role have been mixed. While many are thrilled to see him back in the MCU, some are concerned that Marvel is playing it safe by bringing back their biggest star. Others are disappointed that Doctor Doom, a character with Romani roots, isn’t being portrayed by a Romani actor, missing an opportunity for diverse representation.

However, the general consensus is that Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom is one of the most anticipated aspects of the upcoming Avengers films. As one fan put it, “I believe that RDJ as Doctor Doom is a very bold creative swing, one that’s certainly high risk while offering very high rewards.”

The Future of the MCU

As Marvel Studios moves forward with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the focus will be on how Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom shapes the future of the MCU. With filming set to begin in 2025 and a release date of May 1, 2026, fans can expect more details to emerge as production progresses.

For now, all eyes are on Robert Downey Jr. as he steps into one of Marvel’s most iconic villain roles, setting the stage for what could be a game-changing era for the MCU.
