Nicholas Hoult Shares Lex Luthor Inspirations, Highlighting Smallville

Superman star, Nicholas Hoult, has recently opened up about his creative inspirations behind his version of Lex Luthor, the DC villain. Also, he revealed his appreciation for Michael Rosenbaum’s portrayal of Lex Luthor in Smallville.

During a candid chat with Rosenbaum on his critically acclaimed Inside Of You podcast, Hoult disclosed his fond memories of Rosenbaum’s Lex Luthor. It was the first portrayal of the character he had ever seen and Hoult admired the “depth and charm” that Rosenbaum contributed to the role.

Giving some insights into his early exposure to the DC universe, Hoult said, “I think the first ever Lex I saw was you,” “Yeah, I grew up when Smallville was on. Since I’ve seen Richard Donner’s movies and all the other ones and kind of seen some of the other performances, but you’re the one. I love [your portrayal], it’s the best. You inhabit him with such depth and charm.”

Moreover, Hoult admired the duality of Luthor’s character that can switch from being charming to dangerous which makes him a formidable opponent. According to him, it is Rosenbaum’s portrayal that truly stood out.

Inspiration from ‘All-Star Superman’

Not just the portrayal, Hoult also drew inspiration from the iconic comic run ‘All-Star Superman.’ A particular line said by Luthor in the comic was the catalyst behind him beginning his workout regime for the role. Hoult said, “I have been working out,” because there’s a part in All-Star Superman where he talks about his muscles being real and like hard work and all that. Taking it as motivation, he used it as fuel for the fire.”
