Faraway Downs: Luhrmann’s ‘Australia’ Recreated as New Series

‘Faraway Downs’ Series – A Re-imagined ‘Australia’ Movie by Luhrmann

Surprise! After a successful run with Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis last year, Hulu has come up with a new offering. Faraway Downs, a re-imagined version of Luhrmann’s less successful 2008 movie Australia, is being repackaged as a mini-series. The official trailer portrays an intriguing six-part tale with an aristocratic English woman and a rugged Aussie chumming up to protect a million-acre cattle ranch.

Hulu captions Australia as a ‘cinematic masterpiece’, though the film didn’t live up to the expectations when it was first released. Now reimagined as a series, it seems poised to create a memorable viewing experience. Reprising their roles in the series are the iconic duo, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, along with Brandon Walters, David Wenham, Bryan Brown, Jack Thompson, and David Gulpilil in his final appearance.

The narrative of Faraway Downs explores the tale of an English aristocrat, Lady Sarah Ashley, played by Kidman. She travels across the globe to confront her errant husband and sell an unusual possession, a vast cattle ranch in the Australian Outback called ‘Faraway Downs’.

Following the death of her husband, a ruthless Australian cattle baron, King Carney, laid out by Brown, plots to annex her land. Joined by a rough-hewn cattle drover, portrayed by Jackman, Ashley reluctantly teams up to safeguard her ranch. The sweeping romantic adventure is seen through the eyes of Nullah, a bi-racial Indigenous Australian child, caught in a merciless racial policy, and now referred to as the ‘Stolen Generations.’

The trio journey through intriguing shifts straddling four transformative years, a brewing romance, and the relentless sway of World War II on Northern Australia. The series is an epic saga directed and co-written by Baz Luhrmann (known for Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet, Strictly Ballroom, The Great Gatsby, and Elvis). The show starts streaming from November 26th, 2023 on Hulu.

Are you ready to immerse yourself in this captivating saga? Time will tell if Faraway Downs can script a fresh success story for Luhrmann’s 2008 storyline.
