The action-movie icon Jean-Claude Van Damme makes his debut in the brutal world of Mortal Kombat 1, taking on the role of the suave and powerful Johnny Cage. Enter the Arena with Jean-Claude Van Damme

Van Damme steps into the spotlight, presenting fans with an exciting blend of his real-world martial art skills in the adrenaline-pumping universe of Mortal Kombat 1. The debut footage serves as a high-octane peek into what lies ahead for fans as it showcases Van Damme’s character in intense fight scenes. However, viewer’s discretion is advised due to the explicit violence, gore, and strong language.

From Movies to Video Games

The collaboration between Van Damme and Mortal Kombat is the result of the long-standing admiration Mortal Kombat designer, Ed Boon, harbors for the Universal Soldier star. He initially intended to create a Jean-Claude Van Damme-centric game, but the idea was met with friction. “When we made the very first game, our original intention was to make ‘Van Damme the Arcade Game.’ We wanted to see the words ‘Van Damme’ big there,” Boon said during the interview. “Bloodsport was big, and Universal Soldier I think was, so we called his people, and we were like, ‘We want to make a game based on Van Damme.’ I don’t know if he declined or it just never got to him or something like that, but again, this is a couple of 20-something-year-old kids, wanting to make a video game. I could see how Van Damme would go, ‘No, we’re not doing this.” Flash forward to present times, and it looks like his dream is finally coming true.

Van Damme won’t be the only star lighting up the Mortal Kombat arena; other Hollywood actors, including Megan Fox, John Cena, and J.K. Simmons, will be partaking in the virtual combat. Fox will be reprising the role of Nitara, Simmons will be Omni-Man, and Cena will play Peacemaker from The Suicide Squad, adding more reasons for fans to anticipate the game’s release this September 19th.

The world of Mortal Kombat is set to expand beyond the parameters of the gaming industry. Simon McQuoid is confirmed to direct Mortal Kombat 2, following the critically acclaimed Mortal Kombat, with an impressive cast making their return. As the virtual world and cinema blend to bring this epic saga to life, the addition of Jean-Claude Van Damme only raises the stakes higher for devout fans.
