Hayao Miyazaki’s Latest Film Teases Without Revealing Much
Despite no promotion in Japan for The Boy and the Heron, the U.S. audience gets a glimpse – or rather, a tease. Legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki took an unconventional approach by releasing the film in Japan without sharing even a single still image or trailer. Now, as its U.S. release approaches, a non-traditional teaser emerges.
Interestingly, this teaser presents no film footage but hints at an upcoming full trailer set to coincide with its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It gives just enough to pique curiosity, making it ideal for those who prefer trailers that don’t give too much away.
GKids, set to release the film stateside, describes the current teaser as a “pre-teaser”, with the official English language teaser slated for a September 6 launch.
The absence of a typical promotional strategy in the U.S., especially for a filmmaker of Miyazaki’s global stature, is rare. However, this minimalistic approach has its own charm, maintaining the film’s aura of mystery and enchantment.
From the visionary mind of Studio Ghibli’s co-founder, who brought classics like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, The Boy and the Heron is set for its U.S. debut on September 6 in Toronto. The wider release details are yet to be disclosed.
