Disney’s 2023 live-action reimagining of “The Little Mermaid” topped the weekend box office with a solid holiday opening. It earned $121 million during the 4-day Memorial Day weekend, which is the fifth-best Memorial Day opening ever.

It also has the distinction of having the highest opening ever for a film with a black female lead, surpassing Jordan Peele’s “Us” with Lupita N’yongo, which opened to $71.1 million in 2019.

“Fast X,” the tenth film in the “Fast & Furious” franchise, had the lowest second weekend for a Fast film since Diesel’s return, earning $23 million in three days and $28.6 million over the four-day holiday weekend.

“About My Father,” starring Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro, performed poorly at the box office, earning only $4.2 million over the weekend and $5.2 million estimated through Monday.

Finally, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” made $19.9 million over the weekend, bringing its total to over $304 million.
