Alice Walker’s seminal novel “The Color Purple” is once again being brought to life on the big screen, for the first time in almost four decades. The new adaptation, directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by Oprah Winfrey, promises to be a reimagined and bold take on the original story.
The first official trailer was exclusively released during a virtual event on May 22, 2023, showcasing the film’s star-studded cast and epic, time-spanning narrative.
The trailer gives viewers a taste of the film’s magical realism with exuberant fantasy sequences and poignant moments from the life of Celie, the protagonist.
The cast includes Fantasia Barrino as Celie, Taraji P. Henson as Shug, with supporting roles from Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R., Ciara, Halle Bailey, Louis Gosset Jr., David Alan Grier, and Aunjanue Ellis, among others.
Bazawule, who previously directed segments of Beyoncé’s visual album “Black Is King” and the celebrated 2018 Ghanaian feature “The Burial of Kojo,” has strived to create bold, epic visual motifs that expand the canon of ‘The Color Purple’.
