James Van Der Beek, the actor best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the 1990s teen drama “Dawson’s Creek,” has disclosed his diagnosis of colorectal cancer. In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, the 47-year-old actor shared, “I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family.”
Despite the diagnosis, Van Der Beek remains optimistic about his prognosis, stating, “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.” Colorectal cancer originates in the colon or rectum, parts of the large intestine, and is often treatable when detected early. Common symptoms include changes in bowel habits, abdominal discomfort, and unexplained weight loss.
Throughout his health journey, Van Der Beek has continued his professional endeavors. He recently appeared in an episode of “Walker” and is set to star in the Tubi original film “Sidelined: The QB and Me,” scheduled for release on November 29. Additionally, he will participate in “The Real Full Monty,” a special event airing in December aimed at raising awareness for cancer testing and research. The event will feature other celebrities, including Taye Diggs and Chris Jones.
On the personal front, Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly, have been focusing on family time with their six children. The couple recently shared highlights from a family trip to Egypt, showcasing their commitment to creating lasting memories together.
Van Der Beek’s openness about his diagnosis underscores the importance of regular health screenings and early detection. His participation in awareness initiatives like “The Real Full Monty” further emphasizes his dedication to promoting health education and support for those affected by cancer.
