Ana de Armas takes center stage in the newly released trailer for Ballerina, a spin-off from the acclaimed John Wick franchise. The film is set to premiere on June 6, 2025, expanding the gritty universe that Keanu Reeves helped establish.
De Armas portrays a ballerina-turned-assassin in the film, officially titled From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. The project has been in development for some time, initially filming in 2022 with an expected release in June 2024. However, Lionsgate postponed the debut by a year to allow John Wick director Chad Stahelski to collaborate with Ballerina director Len Wiseman on enhancing the action sequences. This collaboration led to new scenes being shot earlier this year.
The John Wick series is a significant asset for Lionsgate, having introduced audiences to the stoic assassin portrayed by Keanu Reeves in 2014. Reeves has starred in four installments so far and makes a cameo appearance in Ballerina, which is set between the events of the third and fourth films in the main series.
The cast of Ballerina also includes Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, the late Lance Reddick, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, and Ian McShane. Their involvement adds depth to the film’s expansion of the John Wick universe.
The most recent entry, John Wick: Chapter 4, released in 2023, became the highest-grossing film in the franchise with a global box office of $440 million. Discussions about a potential John Wick 5 are ongoing. Notably, the script for Ballerina comes from Shay Hatten, who also penned John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
