And we can hear his vocals too.
Timothée Chalamet transforms into Bob Dylan (vocals included) in the first trailer for A Complete Unknown.
The upcoming biopic will depict the legendary singer-songwriter’s rise to stardom in the New York music scene, leading up to his iconic 1965 Newport Folk Festival performance. It’s based on Elijah Wald’s 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric.
As the official synopsis reads: “A young Bob Dylan shakes up his act on the folk music scene by going electric and siring rock as the voice of a generation, defining one of the most transformative moments in 20th-century music.”
You can check the first trailer above.
The Dune: Part Two star is joined by Elle Fanning as Dylan’s romantic partner Sylvie Russo (said to be inspired by Dylan’s late ex Suze Rotolo), Edward Norton as folk singer and social activist Pete Seeger, The Bikeriders’ Boyd Holbrook as legendary musician Johnny Cash, and Monica Barbaro as singer-songwriter Joan Baez.
The cast also includes PJ Byrne as Harold Leventhal, Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie, Dan Fogler as Albert Grossman, and Will Harrison as Bob Neuwirth.
A Complete Unknown is directed by James Mangold, who has experience in the music biopic genre following his Oscar-winning movie Walk the Line. He also directed Logan and the recent Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Mangold confirmed last April that Chalamet will be singing some of Dylan’s iconic discography in the movie. In the trailer, we get a taste of those vocals.
“It’s such an amazing time in American culture and the story of Bob’s — a young 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with like two dollars in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years,” Mangold told Collider.
“First being embraced into the family of folk music in New York and of course kind of outrunning him at a certain point his star rises beyond belief. It’s such an interesting true story and about such an interesting moment in the American scene.
“Different characters from Woody Guthrie to Bob Dylan to Pete Seeger to Joan Baez — they all have a role to play in this movie.”
A Complete Unknown is set to be released in December in the US and January 2025 in the UK, but release dates are yet to be confirmed.
