Game of Thrones Star Joins Anthony Hopkins in Peacock’s Series ‘Those About to Die’

Peacock has unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming series Those About to Die, set in the cutthroat world of ancient Rome. Directed in part by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Patriot, 2012) and developed by Saving Private Ryan screenwriter Robert Rodat, the show dives deep into Rome’s brutal sporting industry, following the lives of ambitious athletes, scheming politicians, and ruthless gamemasters.

A Star-Studded Cast

Anthony Hopkins and Game of Thrones alum Iwan Rheon lead the ensemble cast. Rheon stars as Tenax, a cunning administrator in charge of the city’s gambling operations. The trailer kicks off with his character’s ominous narration: “Life is of little value in Rome, living in the shadow of the rich and powerful. But all of this is about to change.” The scenes that follow depict the gritty realities of Roman life, including executions, riots, and high-stakes chariot races.

Hopkins takes on the role of Emperor Vespasian, who is seen advising his sons, Titus (Tom Hughes) and Domitian (Jojo Macari), about the dangers facing Rome: “Soon I shall cross to the kingdom of darkness, but nothing is more important than protecting our beloved Rome. Our enemies in Rome are dangerous.”

Intrigue and Action

The trailer also introduces Sara Martins as Cala, a desperate Numidian woman fighting to reunite with her children. Her son Kwame (Moe Hashim) is forced into gladiatorial combat, while her daughters Aura (Kyshan Wilson) and Jula (Alicia Edogamhe) are sold into slavery. “My son, show them you can fight, then we will see each other again,” Cala vows.

As the story unfolds, Tenax reveals his grand vision for Roman entertainment: “I will be master of these games. I know what they crave, and I can devise entertainment that will feed that craving.” The trailer showcases intense gladiatorial battles, including Kwame facing off against towering opponents and crocodiles leaping from a flooded arena.

High Stakes Drama

Domitian (Jojo Macari) sums up the perilous nature of the show: “Kill or be killed.” The trailer flashes through scenes of intimate moments, towering infernos, brutal arena fights, a funeral pyre, and a climactic battle with a lion.
