Shawn Levy Top Choice to Direct MCU’s Next Avengers Movie

Shawn Levy, director of Marvel Studios’ upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, is reportedly the leading candidate to direct one of the MCU’s major future films.

According to Deadline, Levy is the “top choice” to direct Avengers 5. The report indicates Levy has been in discussions with Marvel Studios and received a script from Michael Waldron, who is writing the screenplay for the film.

Levy has not made a decision yet, and Marvel Studios is expected to meet with other directors in the interim. Deadline notes that Avengers 5 is planned to be “more of an ensemble feature.”

Following Deadpool & Wolverine, Levy will also direct several episodes of the final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. There are also rumors about a Star Wars film he might direct for Disney.

What do we know about Avengers 5?

The film was previously titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty but was renamed to the tentative title “Avengers 5” following the firing of Jonathan Majors. Production was supposed to begin this year, but its status is now uncertain.

Avengers 5 is set to release on May 1, 2026. Originally scheduled for May 2, 2025, it was delayed due to rewrites and industry strikes in 2023.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige indicated that Avengers 5 would be among the final entries in Phase 6 of the MCU, starting with the introduction of the Fantastic Four.
