Dwayne Johnson Announces Start Date for Live-Action Moana Movie

In a recent update shared by actor Dwayne Johnson, fresh details regarding the upcoming Disney live-action adaptation of ‘Moana’ were revealed. Johnson posted a behind-the-scenes look of him preparing to reprise his role as Maui, this time in a live-action format. He confirmed via his social media account that production is set to start later this year, notably in the fall.

Originally expected to hit theaters in June 2025, Disney has pushed back the release date to July 10, 2026. Johnson will be working under the direction of Thomas Kail, who has a Tony award under his belt. Johnson, alongside Dany and Hiram Garcia, is producing the film via their Seven Bucks Productions banner. Beau Flynn for Flynn Picture Co. is also named as another producer. Auli‘i Cravalho and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. are at the helm of executive production.

Jared Bush, originally responsible for the screenplay of the animated ‘Moana’, will contribute to the project. Other team members include Samoan industry professional Dana Ledoux Miller.
