Julianne Hough Cast in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein Film

Julianne Hough will make a return to the big screen, bringing power to the ensemble cast of the upcoming horror thriller, The Bride!. This Frankenstein-based movie is directed and produced by Maggie Gyllenhaal, according to a report. The cast of the film includes Hollywood notables such as Christian Bale, Penelope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, Jessie Buckley, and Annette Bening.

Hough’s Return to Cinema

Best known for her performances in Footloose and Burlesque, as well as her time on Dancing with the Stars, Hough’s role in The Bride! marks her big screen comeback after a hiatus of over five years. Her last cinematic outing was in the comedy-drama film Bigger.

The Storyline of The Bride!

The Bride! explores the tale of a lonely Frankenstein who travels to 1930s Chicago and seeks the aid of a doctor, Euphronius. Together, they aim to create a companion for Frankenstein by reviving a murdered young woman. This reinvention, however, yields unintended consequences, leading to a fiery romance, police interest, and the rise of a driven social movement.

This proposition is based off Mary Shelley’s legendary gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.

Gyllenhaal’s Directorial and Production Role

Maggie Gyllenhaal not only directs but is also among the producers of The Bride!, working alongside Talia Kleinhendler, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, and Osnat Handelsman-Keren. This venture marks Gyllenhaal’s second directorial project, following The Lost Daughter from 2021, a film that secured her an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

In a similar vein, Guillermo del Toro is also directing a separate Frankenstein-inspired movie featuring Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Jacob Elordi.

Anticipated Release

The Bride! is currently expected to hit the screens on October 3, 2025.
