Denis Villeneuve Talks Dune: Messiah, Reveals Favorite Dune: Part Two Scene

Director Denis Villeneuve’s recent updates regarding his plans for the next chapter in the Dune series have raised curiosity among fans. While the much-awaited sequel, “Dune: Messiah,” is in pre-production, Villeneuve plans to ensure the screenplay is perfect before proceeding. However, Villeneuve also revealed that he is preparing to take a brief hiatus from the Dune universe to rejuvenate and possibly explore other projects, according to Collider. Despite the challenges faced in bringing one of his most important cinematic moments—the sandworm ride scene—to life for “Dune: Part Two,” Villeneuve expressed his fascination with the overall process.

Villeneuve insisted on taking time to draw up the best screenplay for “Dune: Messiah.” He said, “I just want to make sure that if we do ‘Dune: Messiah,’ we have the best screenplay on the table.” The director explained the sheer joy of visualizing the cinematic idea of the iconic sandworm ride scene in “Dune: Part Two.” He said, “It was a journey. It’s still one of my favorite scenes. It was one of my most important. If you said to me, “Which scene would you have done if there was no movie?” I would have done that scene. It’s such a cinematic idea.”

Villeneuve’s vision for Dune: Part Two and cinematic challenge of Paul’s Sandworm Ride

Every day on the set of “Dune: Part Two” was characterized by unique challenges and hurdles, according to Villeneuve. One scene that was particularly challenging, and high on Villeneuve’s priority list, was Paul’s iconic ride on the sandworm. He had to invent a strategy for Fremen to mount a worm and storyboard the scenes. “On the page as you read, it’s “Paul rides the worm,” and you’re like, “Okay.” There’s not really a description in the book of how Paul can get onto a worm, so I had to figure out, to invent, to create the technique that the Freman used to get onto a worm,” he explained. The sequel, “Dune: Part Two,” is ready to hit theaters on March 1, 2024.
