Paul Thomas Anderson Directs Radiohead’s Thom Yorke in New Music Video

World-renowned filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson is back at it again! This time, not with a cinema blockbuster, but a music video masterpiece. PTA flexes his directorial chops in the latest music video for the track “Wall of Eyes” by rock band, The Smile. What’s special here? Well, his roster of friends includes Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood, and drummer Tom Skinner! They are set to drop a new album in January, and this music video serves as an excellent appetizer. But wait, this isn’t even the best part…

This black and white music video was shot a few weeks ago, right in the heart of London at the The Mildmay Club. And guess what, Yorke himself treats us to some soulful notes while hanging out at this local bar. The vision of the video vividly brings out the track’s title, with several frames focusing on eyes looking out from walls. It’s a pleasure to witness PTA working his magic again, with fresh ideas and a joyous experimental touch.

The genius at work here might just remind you of PTA’s fabulous music film ‘Junun’, which he created with Jonny Greenwood in India. Junun has always been one of our favorite PTA creations, and this nifty music video seems to follow suit!

Attention to compelling details isn’t new to Paul Thomas Anderson. Apart from mainstream cinema like ‘Hard Eight’, ‘Boogie Nights’, ‘Magnolia’, ‘Punch-Drunk Love’, ‘There Will Be Blood’, ‘The Master’, ‘Inherent Vice’, ‘Junun’, ‘Phantom Thread’, and ‘Licorice Pizza’, the filmmaker has given us memorable music videos featuring Radiohead, Haim, and Fiona Apple.

The music video for ‘Wall of Eyes’ is an excellent sneak peek into the upcoming album which will be available from January 2024. Eager for more? Make sure to follow The Smile on Instagram @thesmiletheband or visit their official site for updates.
