Fans of the high-adrenaline John Wick franchise have something to celebrate as Lionsgate announces the development of John Wick: Chapter 5 and three other spin-offs. Two months after the theatrical release of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate executive Joe Drake revealed during an earnings call that the fifth installment is in its early developmental stages.
Furthermore, Drake unveiled that the team is expanding the blockbuster franchise across various mediums, including television and AAA video game spaces. “We’re looking at regular cadence of spin-offs, growing that universe so there’s a steady flow of a franchise with a clear audience appetite,” Drake said. The first spin-off, Ballerina, is expected next year, while the television series, The Continental, is set to air soon.
John Wick: Chapter 4’s director Chad Stahelski and leading star Keanu Reeves have expressed enthusiasm for telling more of the titular assassin’s story. Despite previous plans for a franchise break, the success of the recent installment seems to have invigorated their commitment.
The fourth chapter has pushed the John Wick franchise past the billion-dollar mark at the worldwide box office, earning over $428 million and becoming the highest-grossing John Wick movie. Written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch and directed by Stahelski, John Wick: Chapter 4 features Reeves along with Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, Rina Sawayama, Shamier Anderson, Bill Skarsgard, Clancy Brown, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Donnie Yen.
