First Trailer for Godzilla Minus One in Black and White

The world of cinema is currently enjoying the release of “Godzilla Minus One,” directed by Takashi Yamazaki, which has captivated audiences, accumulating impressive box office figures of nearly $35 million in the U.S. and $30 million internationally. Now, in a creative move echoing directors like George Miller, Bong Joon Ho, and Guillermo del Toro, a black-and-white version titled “Godzilla-1.0/C” is in the spotlight. While this monochromatic adaptation is set to premiere in Japan on January 12, its international release date remains unconfirmed.

A Different Angle on a Familiar Story

The film takes an innovative approach. This 33rd entry in Toho Studios’ kaiju series portrays Godzilla more as an abstract force than a physical entity. The story begins with a brief, intense Godzilla rampage and then shifts focus, portraying the monster as an unseen but omnipresent threat, symbolized through the character Kōichi Shikishima, played by Ryunosuke Kamiki.

Drawing parallels with the original 1954 “Godzilla” by Ishiro Honda, an allegory for nuclear destruction, “Godzilla Minus One” offers a modern twist on this theme. Its recent Japanese predecessor, “Shin Godzilla” by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, also touched on contemporary issues, particularly the bureaucratic response to the Fukushima disaster.

Anticipating the Black and White Version

While audiences are currently enjoying the original version of “Godzilla Minus One,” anticipation is building for the black-and-white “Godzilla-1.0/C.” The trailer and poster for this version have already sparked interest, suggesting a fresh perspective on the Godzilla story.
