Crafted by Andy Breckman, the writer of Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, a sequel could be in the works and it seems he hasn’t spilled the beans to the movie’s lead star Tony Shalhoub and, interestingly, even his wife. Notably, their wives balked at their involvement in Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie initially. The prospective sequel, however, hinges on fans’ reaction and both Breckman and Shalhoub’s commitment to portray Monk’s characteristic misery and fear faithfully.
A Sequel for Monk?
In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Breckman disclosed that he’s cooked up a sequel idea for the Monk movie, but he hasn’t shared it with Tony Shalhoub yet. Remarkably, his wife’s approval plays a crucial role before he can move on with the sequel idea.
“I do [have thoughts]. When you’re a writer you can’t turn that part of your brain off, and I have been thinking about where we might be able to go. I’m very excited about it but I haven’t told anyone about it, not Tony and certainly not my wife after that pitching experience [for Mr. Monk’s Last Case, which their wives didn’t want them to make],” said Breckman.
Amusingly, even Shalhoub joined the fun, declaring, “Whatever you do, don’t tell my wife.”
Keeping The Door Open For Monk
Despite the response from their wives, Breckman expressed his hopefulness towards continuing Monk’s adventures depending entirely on fans’ reception.
“So I do know where I’d like to take it. We’ll have to see how this all plays out so far. People have been very enthusiastic and very positive. And I hope that door is open in the future.”
Monk Sequel: What Would Tony Shalhoub Like To See?
When asked about what directions he’d like to see for Monk in a potential sequel to Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, Shalhoub gave a thoughtful response.
“I don’t know. That’s a good question. The writers put Monk through the wringer so many different ways, and to great effect and great results.”
Breckman, on the other hand, suggested that Monk’s fans send him some creative ideas on how to further imbue complexity to the beloved character.
“If any of your readers or listeners have any ideas, please forward them to us,” implored Breckman.
Bringing Monk Back Down
At the conclusion of Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, the detective appears hopeful but both the star and the writer concur that Monk returns to his top form when he’s down, lonely, and downright afraid.
“I mean, I don’t know, the challenge with this character is that he’s in, as we find out at the end of this movie, he gets to a more hopeful spot. But we don’t want to get this character in too positive mindset. You know, his strength is in his misery and his loneliness and his fear and his depression. So, he can feel good, but not for too long.”
