Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Wrote Letters of Support for Danny Masterson After Rape Conviction

In a surprising turn of events, Danny Masterson, known for his role on That ’70s Show, received character references from his former co-stars before facing a 30-year prison sentence for two counts of rape.

Danny Masterson’s Sentencing Background

Danny Masterson was handed a 30-year prison sentence for two instances of rape that took place during his days on That ’70s Show. Before the court made its decision, several of Masterson’s co-stars, including Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, submitted letters vouching for his character.

Ashton Kutcher’s Letter to the Court

Ashton Kutcher, 45, penned a heartfelt letter in support of Masterson, describing the latter as a “role model.” “As a role model, Danny has consistently been an excellent one,” Kutcher wrote. He attributes his own evasion of Hollywood’s notorious drug culture directly to Masterson. Kutcher also detailed an event where Masterson intervened to help a woman who was being berated by her boyfriend in a pizza parlor, writing, “He has always treated people with decency, equality, and generosity.”

Mila Kunis Joins in Defense

Mila Kunis, 40, also wrote a letter supporting Masterson, speaking highly of his “exceptional character.” “Throughout our time together, Danny has proven to be an amazing friend, confidant, and, above all, an outstanding older brother figure to me,” Kunis wrote. She credits Masterson for being an incredible friend and “older brother figure,” stating that his guidance has helped her grow both personally and professionally.

Other Co-Stars and Friends Weigh In

Kutcher and Kunis weren’t the only ones to back Masterson. That ’70s Show and That ’90s Show star Kurtwood Smith wrote, “Danny was the leader among his contemporaries in the cast. He was a tad older and much more experienced and he took that position seriously.” Debra Jo Rupp wrote, “One of the first things Danny did with them was to sit [the teens] all down (he had a little meeting) and had them all make a pact that no one would do drugs.”

Ashton Kutcher’s Past Remarks on Masterson

This is not the first time Kutcher has spoken about Masterson. In a previous interview with Esquire, he said, “I just don’t know.” He added he wanted Masterson “to be found innocent of the charges brought against him” while also expressing his support for the victims of abuse.

The Path Forward

Danny Masterson has begun the process to appeal his 30-year sentence. His rape trial initially resulted in a mistrial but concluded with his conviction on two counts of rape in May. He was facing a maximum sentence of 30 years to life when he entered the court for sentencing on Thursday — which he received.
