The Little Mermaid has always charmed us with its enchanting tale of Ariel, the vivacious mermaid with an insatiable curiosity for adventure. As the youngest and most audacious amongst King Triton’s daughters, Ariel embarks on a dangerous quest to explore the world beyond her ocean home. Intrigued by human life and smitten by the handsome Prince Eric, Ariel defies ancient laws prohibiting mermaids from interacting with humans and makes a dangerous pact with Ursula, the malevolent sea witch. Ariel’s dreams bring her closer to the life she desires but also threatens the stability of her father’s kingdom and her own life.
This reimagination is commanded by director Rob Marshall and scriptwriter David Magee. The storytelling has been reinvented for the live-action format by David Magee, Rob Marshall, and John DeLuca, while underpinned by the original short story by Hans Christian Andersen and Disney’s animated film by Ron Clements and John Musker.
Production is spearheaded by Marc Platt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Rob Marshall, and John DeLuca, with Jeffrey Silver orchestrating everything behind the scenes as the executive producer. The mesmerizing score is composed by none other than Alan Menken, the mastermind behind “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin,” who was honoured with two Oscars for his work in the animated version of The Little Mermaid. Musical supervision and production bear the signature of Mike Higham with lyrics penned by Howard Ashman and new lyrics brought to life by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
