Gene Hackman and Wife’s Deaths Deemed ‘Suspicious’ as Investigation Unfolds

Authorities in Santa Fe, N.M., have deemed the deaths of actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, classical musician Betsy Arakawa, 63, as “suspicious” following a preliminary investigation. The couple was discovered deceased in their home on Wednesday afternoon, prompting law enforcement to secure a search warrant for further examination.

According to an affidavit released by New Mexico authorities, while no immediate signs of foul play were evident, several unusual circumstances led to a more thorough inquiry. As reported by New Mexico authorities, the responding deputy found the front door unsecured and open, a healthy dog roaming the property, another healthy dog near Arakawa’s body, and a deceased dog in a closet approximately 10-15 feet away from her remains. Additional concerns included a space heater found near Arakawa’s head, an open prescription pill bottle with scattered pills, and Hackman’s body being located in a separate room. Notably, there were no obvious signs of a gas leak, further adding to the mystery surrounding their deaths.

The affidavit details that Arakawa’s body was found in the bathroom, exhibiting advanced signs of decomposition, including facial bloating and mummification in her hands and feet. A deputy noted that a space heater was nearby, speculating that it may have fallen if she had collapsed suddenly. Hackman was discovered in the mudroom, with similar signs of decomposition, leading investigators to believe both individuals perished unexpectedly.

Authorities have indicated that their investigation will involve examining the property’s structure, including its furniture, walls, plumbing, and gas lines, to rule out potential environmental factors such as exposure to toxic gases. The affidavit notes that such exposure can result in sudden and unexpected fatalities.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials remain focused on determining the exact cause of death, with forensic examinations and toxicology reports expected to provide additional insights in the coming days.
