Tom Holland, the internet’s favorite neighborhood Spider-Man, is finally back. After keeping a low profile since 2023, when he announced a much-needed break from acting, Holland is ready to return to the spotlight—this time under the direction of none other than Christopher Nolan. A break that followed a hectic lineup including Spider-Man: No Way Home, Cherry, Uncharted, and The Crowded Room, it seems Holland is ready to tackle more than superpowered teen angst. And if anyone can bring out another side of Holland, it’s probably Nolan.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Holland is joining Matt Damon in leading Nolan’s top-secret new project for Universal. As usual with Nolan’s movies, details are tightly under wraps. There’s no title or synopsis yet, but the film is expected to be released in July 2026, and word on the street is that it’s not set in the present day. In other words, typical Nolan mystery box stuff.
Meanwhile, Holland is also dusting off his Spidey suit for another round as the web-slinger. It’s the longest we’ve gone without a live-action Spider-Man movie since 2012, but Holland says the Spider-Man 4 script is coming along—it’s apparently “excellent,” though still “needs work.” Considering No Way Home managed to wrangle three Peter Parkers into one movie without the multiverse collapsing in on itself, expectations are high (or at least curiously cautious) about what that “work” might entail.
On the Rich Roll Podcast, Holland got candid about the complications of working in a franchise this sprawling. Turns out, being part of a billion-dollar movie machine comes with some strings attached—not the least of which are timeline inconsistencies. As Holland put it, being a “small cog in a large machine” means that any new Spidey flick has to “fit into that timeline at the right time to benefit the bigger picture.” That’s franchise filmmaking for you: part storytelling, part industrial puzzle-solving.
In true on-and-offscreen partner style, Holland apparently read the new Spider-Man script with Zendaya by his side, revealing that they were “bouncing around the living room” while reading it. Holland described it as “a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect.” Though imagining Zendaya earnestly saying that might require some suspension of disbelief, it’s good to know they’re excited. Maybe next time someone could hand her a copy of Joker: Folie À Deux to really put her critical instincts to the test.
