Daniel Day-Lewis Comes Out of Retirement to Star in Son’s Directorial Debut ‘Anemone’

Daniel Day-Lewis, the three-time Oscar-winning actor, is set to return to the screen after a seven-year hiatus. Day-Lewis, who retired after his critically acclaimed performance in 2017’s Phantom Thread, will star in his son Ronan Day-Lewis’s directorial debut, Anemone. The project marks a highly anticipated collaboration between father and son, with both cowriting the script.

A Father-Son Creative Partnership

Focus Features and Plan B Entertainment announced the film on Tuesday, revealing that Anemone will explore themes of familial relationships, particularly focusing on the intricate dynamics between fathers, sons, and brothers. The film boasts an impressive cast, including Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings), Samantha Morton (The Serpent Queen), Samuel Bottomley (How to Have Sex), and Safia Oakley-Green (She Said).

Daniel Day-Lewis’s Return After Retirement

After announcing his retirement ahead of Phantom Thread, Day-Lewis has kept a low profile. His return to acting comes after a rare public appearance earlier this year, where he honored director Martin Scorsese, hinting at the possibility of “one more” project. Now, with Anemone, Day-Lewis breaks his retirement to team up with his son for what promises to be an emotionally charged film.

Focus Features’ Excitement for ‘Anemone’

“We could not be more excited to partner with a brilliant visual artist in Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator,” said Peter Kujawski, Focus Features Chairman. He praised the father-and-son duo’s script, calling it “exceptional,” and expressed eagerness to bring their vision to life with the help of Plan B.

Further details about the release date of Anemone are yet to be announced, but anticipation is already high for Daniel Day-Lewis’s return to the screen.
