Mars First Logistics: Building Game Set on Mars Got an Impressive Update

Efforts to make Mars more accessible for commuters are ramping up as Mars First Logistics explores the charm of train networks. The latest update for this physics-based open-world build-a-car game brings a mountable theodolite, a nifty tool that allows players to create monorail networks, adding a whole new dimension to transportation on the Red Planet.

For those who find monorails a bit too frivolous, fear not. The theodolite also offers the ability to build networks of pipes, power lines, and even rail-less tarmac roads, presenting players with diverse infrastructural possibilities. This substantial expansion, as lead developer Ian MacLarty puts it, has just “scratched the surface” of the new system’s potential, hinting at more thematic innovations to come—possibly even theme park management or factory simulation elements in the future.

In the spirit of providing a comprehensive gaming experience, the new building functionality is activated by obtaining the Scout blueprint, which takes the place of the previous buggy blueprint. This update includes new building missions, though mission completion is optional for creative endeavors. Players still need to navigate the Martian terrain in their rovers while constructing infrastructure, maintaining the essence of vehicle construction as the core activity of the game.

MacLarty outlined new contract types that involve connecting different stations using various structures, such as building a water pipe between a reservoir and a habitat. Additionally, players now need to construct transmitters themselves rather than discovering them. These transmitters require line-of-sight to each other, adding a strategic layer to exploring Mars’ landscapes.

Speaking of landscapes, the update introduces clouds—acknowledging their real-life presence on Mars, rather than merely serving as a calming visual touch. The team at Shape Shop has implemented several smaller improvements and fixes to further enhance player experience, as follows:

  • Increased camera zoom.
  • The grapple hook now works on terrain by default.
  • Fair contracts are now unlocked alongside other areas, providing more options from the start.
  • More accurate map fog.
  • A bug with the wind turbine delivery zone in co-op has been fixed.
  • Various other minor fixes and tweaks.

Expect the game’s next update to be small and incremental, with a more significant update scheduled for the following year. MacLarty hints at big plans for the theodolite, indicating potential future integrations such as rocket refueling within the fuel pipelines, emphasizing the ever-evolving nature of the game. While rocket refueling sounds practical, some may still hold out hope for more whimsical additions like rollercoasters with loop-de-loops.

“Mars First Logistics is even more delightful than it looks,” wrote Sin last July, highlighting the game’s approachable design and smooth controls. It’s clear the game has continued to evolve nicely since then.
