Kevin Smith dives into his roots with his latest film.
In a heartfelt nod to 1980s teen movies, Kevin Smith has unveiled the trailer for his 16th film, The 4:30 Movie. Dubbed his “most personal film to date,” this coming-of-age story is set to hit theaters through Saban Films on September 13.
Set during the summer of 1986, The 4:30 Movie centers around three 16-year-old friends who make a habit of sneaking into movies at their local cineplex. The plot thickens when Brian (Austin Zajur) invites Melody (Siena Agudong), his crush, to watch an R-rated film. Chaos ensues as they face off against a pompous theater manager (Ken Jeong) and navigate teen rivalries.
Smith describes the film as a “poignant comic valentine to moviegoing and the youth of the ’80s.” He emphasized his personal connection to the project, announcing its world premiere on August 24 at Smodcastle Cinemas, a theater in Atlantic Highlands, NJ, which he saved from demolition in 2022. Smith fondly recalls watching movies there as a child.
“It’s a personal paean to the John Hughes coming-of-age movies I grew up watching, shot in the same movie theater where I saw ’em all as a kid!” Smith shared on Instagram.
