Amazon, the multinational technology company, proclaimed its collaboration with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, popular for creating the television hit, Fleabag, to produce a new Tomb Raider television series. The originator of ‘Fleabag,’ described in the press announcement as the series’ writer and executive producer, has shown no signs of taking on an onscreen role at this point.
Collaboration with Crystal Dynamics and Aquatic Ventures
This project forms part of a larger partnership between Tomb Raider studio, Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon encompassing several films and shows centred around the Tomb Raider franchise. Both companies are also currently designing a new single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure Tomb Raider game.
‘Tomb Raider’s’ Role in Waller-Bridge’s Life
When asked about the project, Waller-Bridge expressed her elation, stating, “If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”
In the light of this proclamation, Waller-Bridge’s recent participation in ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ appears to be a precursor to her more profound involvement in the actual Tomb Raider narrative.
Introductory Efforts with Tomb Raider Films
The latest Tomb Raider adaptation was the 2018 film ‘Tomb Raider’ starring Alicia Vikander. Although the film was based on the successful game franchise, it fell short at the box office causing a halt in the plans for an ongoing franchise with Vikander as Lara Croft. Noteworthy is the fact that Angelina Jolie originally played the role of Lara Croft in two big-budget blockbuster movies during the early 2000s.
‘Wrapping Up’
Splendid sequels often follow unfortunate productions, as history has shown. The anticipation around the upcoming Tomb Raider series offers a promising step forward for the franchise. For those eager to dig more into the realm of video game adaptations and sequels, check out HitPlay.
