Anne Hathaway has fans of “Princess Diaries” excited as she recently provided a positive update on the development of the long-awaited third installment. Speaking to V magazine, Hathaway conveyed optimism about the current progress of “Princess Diaries 3.”
“We’re in a good place,” Hathaway stated. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
The development of “Princess Diaries 3” has been a topic of interest since Disney confirmed its production back in 2022. The screenplay for the new film is being crafted by Aadrita Mukerji, known for her work on “Supergirl,” with Debra Martin Chase, a producer from the original movies, returning to her role. Melissa Stack, who penned “The Other Woman,” is on board as an executive producer. The upcoming film is set to continue the story from the beloved 2001 and 2004 films, although details about whether Hathaway and Julie Andrews will reprise their iconic roles have not yet been released.
Reflecting on her career and her breakout role as Mia Thermopolis, Hathaway shared how the experience shaped her approach to acting and her involvement in film projects. “To be honest, it never occurred to me that I didn’t have the power of a point of view, at least creatively as it related to my character. I’m really lucky. My first substantial film role, the second film I ever did, was ‘The Princess Diaries.’ I was so generously invited into that process by Garry Marshall; he valued my take on being a teenage girl and elevated me to such a valued status on set that it never occurred to me on other sets that I didn’t have that same autonomy, or that same ability to collaborate,” Hathaway recounted.
Hathaway’s enthusiasm for the potential third film was also evident in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in October 2022, where she expressed her hopes for involving Julie Andrews once again. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work,” Hathaway said. “We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”
