Poor Things Outshines Barbie at the Golden Globes

It’s time for Barbie to seek out another party. Greta Gerwig’s bright-pink sensation was outclassed by “Poor Things”. Yes, the Frankenstein-esque narrative by director Yorgos Lanthimos won the 2024 Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Previously in 2023, another dark comedic story, “The Banshees of Inisherin”, had won the much-sought-after Golden Globe.

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone: A Winning Duo

Director Yorgos Lanthimos, along with parts of the cast and crew, including lead actress Emma Stone, made it onto the stage. Lanthimos took the opportunity to pay tribute to his ‘birthday buddy’ Bruce Springsteen who was among the audience. Not only did “Poor Things” win Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, but Emma Stone also earned her Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor – Motion Picture, Musical/Comedy.

“I just wanted to speak to Bruce Springsteen the whole night. We have the same birthday, 23rd of September. He’s been my hero since I grew up.”

Lanthimos and Stone are set to collaborate once again, having previously worked on “The Favourite” and “Poor Things”. They are due to reunite for “Kinds of Kindness”, which is currently in the editing process by Lanthimos. The director has teased it to be a “very different film” during his appearance at the Golden Globes.

“It’s a very different film. It’s three contemporary stories, and there’s a core of actors — seven total — who play one character in each story,” he said. “So, they’ll play three different characters. We’ll have that for you soon.”

Critics and Audiences Applaud “Poor Things”

With a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes, critics have been fawning over “Poor Things”. Considering its warm reception, it’s unsurprising that the Emma Stone-led movie swept the Golden Globes. Furthermore, Stone herself secured a Golden Globe (Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy) earlier in the night for her stellar work in “Poor Things”.
