Hollywood remains consistent in its assurance that any successful franchise will experience cycles of rebirth, either as a reboot, revival, or a remake. This trend is exemplified by recent projects such as Jake Gyllenhaal’s new Road House, the long-lasting appeal of Cobra Kai for both nostalgic and new audiences, and Donald Glover’s reimagining of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Ryan Coogler, a celebrated writer and director known for Black Panther, plans to reboot The X-Files, hoping to achieve success along the lines of the aforementioned remakes, without receiving the lukewarm responses already being directed towards the upcoming reboot of The Crow.

The X-Files boasted a dominating presence in the realm of 1990s sci-fi, and ran for eleven seasons, which included a two-season continuation beginning in 2016, and multiple films. The show succeeded in satisfying its audience week after week with its blend of intriguing suspense and the dynamic believer-skeptic relationship between lead characters, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson).

Coogler is currently bound by a five-year contract with Walt Disney Television. This positions The X-Files reboot to remain within the original family. However, this series might migrate to Hulu, as suggested by Variety, due to Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the original producer of the series. Chris Carter, the original creator of the series, has given his approval of the project. According to Carter, Coogler’s reboot is set to feature a diverse cast. Carter acknowledges the challenge that Coogler is undertaking, given the expansive domain already explored by the original series.

The cast of the reboot remains undocumented, though there are some hints to who might be involved. Gillian Anderson, Dana Scully in the original series, who has previously been reluctant to join a reboot, hinted at potential interest in participating in Coogler’s reboot. During an interview with TODAY, she praised him as a “brilliant, brilliant director,” and suggested that she might show up briefly in the reboot. Also, the possibility of Michael B. Jordan, a frequent Coogler collaborator, being involved in the project hasn’t been ruled out.

There’s yet to be an official release date, but the earliest possible timeframe would be sometime in 2025, considering the project is still in its early stages.

Considering the early development of the project, there isn’t a trailer available at this time.

Understanding the Project
